Forensic Science Day

On Friday 28 September, Year 6's from all the Hadleigh Pyramid, were invited to Hadleigh High School to solves a 'crime'.  Mr Heron's beloved skeleton Bones, had been stolen and it was up to the children to find the suspect and Bones.

All the children met in the Drama Hall and Mrs Tooze explained the situation and then introduced a police officer who could give them a more detailed account of what had happened. The suspects were introduced and they were; Lucy Locket, Peter Brock, Viola Tuitalie, Juliet O'Connell and Louisa from Alabamma.

Each school was split into teams and sent off to various science rooms. Elmsett were with St Mary's and were team Shark.  The first job they had to do was to identify some fingerprints, but in order to do that, they had to learn how to take a fingerprint and dust for it.  Alot of patience was needed to find those fingerprints!

The next step was to identify some ink from a black pen and this was done using a process called chromatography.  Using 5 different pens on 5 pieces of filter paper, the children had to put drops of water on the pen and see how it spread on the filter paper.  They could then compare it to samples taken from the crime scene.

The last session was to identify shoe scrapings.  Using 5 different samples combined with a chemical, it was possible to identify which shoe scraping was 'Shake & Vac' because the substance produced gas bubbles.

At the end of the day, everyone reassembled in the Drama Hall to give their verdict on who the suspect was.  It was conclusive that suspect 3 - Louisa from Alabamma - had stolen Bones.  He was located in a cupboard and returned to Mr Heron, whilst Louisa was marched away in handcuffs!
