
What is the BT Award?
In 2004, with the help of Elton D'Souza, Nicci Gerrard and Sean French, Elmsett entered the BT Awards (sponsored by The Guardian Newspaper). Initially out of 1200 National entries from schools in England, Scotland and Wales, Elmsett was one of the 240 schools that won an initial award and grant.
The initial award and grant that was awarded to the school was the sum of £2000. This grant was used to finance the writing and illustrating of a book. The children with the help of Nicci Gerrard and Sean French (two local authors ) wrote stories based on an Angolan folk story. This was then illustrated by the children with the help of Hilli Thompson and then both the story and illustrations were brought together to produce a book called The Fox and the Wolf. The 240 schools then had the chance to go for a further award of which there were three, (1 for Scotland, 1 for Wales and 1 for England). Of all the schools entered, Elmsett was chosen as a winner! Elmsett was presented with an award for £10,000. The book has since been translated into Portuguese and reprinted for use in the SOS School in Angola.
