14 Jul 2011 - Visit to Masons Recycling Plant
Year 2, 3 and 4 were given the opportunity to visit Masons Recyling Centre and Landfill at Great Blakenham. On arrival they were taken to a meeting room to watch a powerpoint about recycling. Then rubbish (clean, of course) was tipped onto the tables and had to be sorted by the children into three bins: landfill, compost and recyling.
It was then time to visit the plant, so hi-viz jackets, a hard hat, safety glasses and headphones had to be worn. The tour took them onto a high metal grid walkway. It was a bit scary, especially as the conveyor belt was running underneath with all the rubbish on it. They watched the dumper truck tip the rubbish out and then it was sorted. There was a magnetic area to sort metals and an area that had a special light that could identify and sort different plastics.
Finally, the children were taken back to the meeting room to decorate canvas bags using fabric pens.
Here is what the children had to say about the trip:
My favourite part was when we looked at the machines and rubbish. I did not know how much you can recycle. By Emilia.
I really enjoyed looking at the machines and making the bags. I also enjoyed the sorting game. By Ben.
It was really fun when we got the radio and ear muffs. By Hannah
I liked seeing the big truck pick up all the rubbish and put it onto the conveyor belt. By Amelia.
I really enjoyed watching the machinery work. It was amazing how big the machines were. Before I didn’t have a clue what a recycling plant looked like. By Joe.
I liked the sorting game. It was fun. I learnt lots of things I didn't know about recycling. By Lauren.
