8 May 2008 - Scarecrow making day and allotment opening

On a bright and sunny morning in early May, the whole school lined up in the playground with a plant in hand, to walk down to the new school allotment. There had been alot of planning in preparation, not only at the allotment, but also the growing of vegetable seedlings to plant in it.
At the allotment Reverand ffrench gave a blessing and Hilary Furlong cut the ribbon.
The children were then split into groups, which were rotated through the day. Two groups were making scarecrows (that they had designed the previous week), one group was working at the allotment and the last group learning Scarecrow dances. We also had Claire (dance), Caroline (scarecrows) and Mary (allotment) from Eastfest helping us.
This is what Jay, Caleb and Alicia had to say about the day.

We had a very fun day at school on the 7 May because it was the Eastfeast day at school. There was dancing with Claire, building scarecrows and going to the allotments but my favourite part of the day was dancing.
First we sat down next to Claire and her music player (which looked very funky) and listenend to some creepy music. Max and I thought it was very ghostly like music. So we all started to do a ghostly scarecrow dance. First group one hid behind the first tree and the second group, which I was in, hid behind the second tree. Then when the music started group one came over to the middle of the field very slowly doing some ghost movements, then my group did the same after group one. When we were all in the middle of the field, we crept doing some more ghost scarecrow like moves.
Next we crouched down and wiggled our fingers over the grass, pretending they were our vegetables, then we again pretended we heard crows swooping over, so we jumped up and scared all the crows away. Next we did some huge turns. Then the dance finised and we got an ice cream each. It was a brilliant day!

Yesterday some people were making scarecrows. I helped make the gardener. The scarecrow I liked the best was the James Bond one, becasue it has a gun and sun glasses. I liked the dance with Claire. I liked it when we had to run down the field. That was awesome! The scarecrows were very hard to make, but we finished in time. At the end we had to do a dance in front of the Mums and Dads. I was very shy.

We made some scarecrows on the 7 May. We had to bring all old things like old clothes, old shoes and wire, balloons, tin cans and bottles. Caroline was in charge of making the scarecrows. After you had made the heads you had to put PVA glue over the heads. When you were making the scarecrows, you could get the nails and hammer then in. You had to paint the heads after the PVA glue had dried. The scarecrows we made were James Bond, a footballer, a librarian, gardener, fisherman and a lollypop lady with a friendship stop.
